The programme provided ICT training and cultural exposure for the students in China. The students were exposed to Chinese culture and information technology related products and services. Upon arrival the students spent 21 hours receiving training in Basic Chinese. They also visited the Huawei Headquarters where they received training in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), telecommunications, 5G, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Networking, Internet of Things (IOT) and Cloud Computing. They were also exposed to SMART projects such as SMART City, SMART Education, SMART Healthcare and SMART Energy on display at an exhibition. Faculty and Staff Achievements • Mr. Kirkland Rowe, senior lecturer in the School of Engineering received two awards in 2018: Legends in Energy Recognition: Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in recognition of distinguish energy professional and JEE Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the Jamaica Society of Energy Engineers (JSEE) and in the field of Energy Management respectively. • Mr. Dwaine Hibbert was granted the Research Development Fund in the sum of 2 million Dollars for his project titled, “Promoting STEM Education: A Case Study on the Challenges and Opportunities in Integrating Desktop CNC Technology in Grades 7-9. • The School of Engineering participated in the PCJ Renewable Energy Expo at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on June 15 and 16, 2018. The SOE showcased Major Projects that were sponsored by the PCJ. Two prototypes, the Floating PV System and the PV module location Optimiser were on display while posters of the other sponsored projects were mounted on the display walls. • Three members of academic staff (Ms. Tara-Sue Rhoden, Dr. Therese Chambers, Mr. Balvin Thorpe were successful in the Certified Energy Manager examinations held in April 2019 and now hold the international designation of Certified Energy Manager. This brings the complement of CEMs in the School of Engineering to five. • Ms Carolyn Ferguson was elevated to Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Senior Membership Linkages/Collaborations MoU with the PCJ UTech, Jamaica and the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) signed an agreement to provide energy audit training for some 100 public sector facilities managers through the PCJ’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Programme (EECP). The agreement was formally signed on September 12, 2018 by President, Huawei Seeds for the Future 2018 scholarship awardees from left to right: Ms. Juleen Gentles, Mr. Taslan Graham, Mr. Hushane Esson, Mr. OswinWilson and Ms. Kasjshae Quimwarrwye.
