Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 61 Fisheries (MICAF) was guest speaker on Day One of the conference, which featured a food tree planting ceremony. The conference activities included presentations, panel discussions, special reports and demonstrations. Representatives from various faculties and colleges, including students, participated in the event. Other participants included the, the Ministry of Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Caribbean Research Development Institute Ministry of Industry, Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries, the College of Agriculture Science & Education and the Scientific Research Council (SRC). International Day 773 students and 50 teachers from 25 schools across the island participated in International Day. In attendance also were diplomatic and cultural representatives from three Spanish-speaking countries, as well as the Ministry of Education. The Annual H. Pamela Kelly Lecture The Caribbean Association of Tertiary-level Academic Language Practitioners (CATALP), which operates out of the Language Teaching and Research Centre (LTRC), assisted in the staging of the event by facilitating the involvement of the presenter, as well as the attendance of members across two Caribbean states: Bahamas and Guyana. The Patois Debate This event was planned and executed jointly with the UTech Debating and Public Speaking Society. Held on March 15, 2018, it featured debaters from UTech, Jamaica, and the University of the West Indies debating for the first time in Jamaican Creole using the British Parliamentary format. Celebration of World Poetry Day The Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies through the School of Humanities and Social Sciences celebrated World Poetry Day on March 21, 2019. The event included stirring poetry readings from students as well as invited guests: Mr. Richard ‘Dingo’ Dingwall and Professor Mervyn Morris, former Jamaican Poet Laureate. Creation of Professional Association The Caribbean Association of Tertiary-Level Academic Literacies Practitioners (CATALP) was launched at the FELS Third International Conference on Humanities and Education on May 25, 2019. CATALP, which is registered as a non-profit entity under the aegis of the LTRC, is the first and only professional organization domiciled in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Its membership consists of educators working in the field of English Language-mediated postsecondary literacy skills development. It aims to promote high quality research-based teaching, facilitate collaboration among practitioners as well as partnerships with relevant stakeholders and be strong advocates for the field of Academic Literacies while engendering a commitment to lifelong learning. The Honourable Audley Shaw, CD, MP, Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries presents a fruit tree seedling to Lecturer, Dr. Audrey DaCosta. The plant seedlings were presented at the opening ceremony of the inaugural UTech, Jamaica UNESCO-UNEVOC Centre for Research and Sustainable Development Conference and Exhibition on October 16, 2018 at THE Papine Campus.
