Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 51 - The School participated in the Taste of Jamaica Competition held in November 2018 and ably represented by students, Mishawn Chin-See and Donat Brown. Mishawn Chin-See competed in the Crème Brûlée category and Donat Brown in the Junior Chef of the Year category. Ms. Brown was awarded a bronze medal in the Junior Chef of the Year category. - Abigail Scarlette was awarded the 2018 Governor General’s Award for Youth Achievement – Award for Excellence in Community Service Business Model Competition Two of the UTech Jamaica Business Model Competition teams - Xermosol and CCML which competed in the 2019 National Business Model Competition, qualified to compete at the International Business Model Competition (IBMC) in the global finals at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah USA from May 9- 10, 2019. The Joan Duncan Trust approved $1.7M dollars to support the teams attending the IMBC, the overall cost of sending both teams were approximately $2 million. Both of the UTech Jamaica teams made it to the semi-final round after competing alongside the 40 teams invited to the global finals. GrowthWheel Training Staff members received training in Growth Wheel which is a leading system for business incubators. Special Events SOBA - The Finance Division in the School of Business Administration conducted its first Finance Symposium on February 6, 2019, under the theme: “Growth and Development: Is Expanding the Capital Market the Answer?” The main presenter was Dr Constant Lonkeng-Ngouana, IMF Resident Representative for Jamaica. A panel discussion followed thereafter and was chaired by Mr Robin Levy, Group CEO Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League. - The Accounting Division conducted its 2nd Accounting Symposium on March 7, 2019, under the theme: “The Impact of Technology on Accounting Ethics and the Accounting Profession” The presenters were: Ms. Justine Collins, Attorney-at-law, Hart Muirhead Fatta, Dr. Sean Thorpe, Associate Professor &Head, School of Computing and Information Technology and Dr. Phillip James, Accounting Lecturer, School of Business Administration. - The 16th Annual Lloyd Edwards Memorial Lecture was held on March 25, 2019 under the theme “Driving Business Growth and Development through Technology Adoption”. The guest speaker was Mr. Tyrone Wilson, Founder, President and CEO of eMedia Interactive Group. - The 24th Annual Students’ Conference, School of Business Admini s t rat ion (Papine Elated winners of the 6th UTech, Jamaica Business Model Competition, team Xermosel members, Rayvon Stewart (4th left) and Tonian Edwards (centre), students of the Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership (JDSEEL), College of Business andManagement (COBAM), pose with their plaque and symbolic cheque on February 8, 2019 at the Technology Innovation Centre, Papine Campus.
