The SGSRE assisted the Department of Community Service in reviewing a proposal for submission to the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) for funding support for the “Saturday University” project. - “Citi-Lab” Project - The Faculty of The Built Environment continued implementation of the “Citi-Lab” project that is aimed at the infusion of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach into selected courses/modules at the Universities within the 15-member consortium led by the University of Antwerp, Belgium. Dr. Carol Archer, Faculty of the Built Environment, is the local Project Leader. The project funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme. - “User Experience Design.” The University was asked to partner on an application for a grant under the Erasmus+ Call for Proposals. The Technical University of Sofia in Bulgaria is leading the consortium of institutions making the application. The project title is: “UXD- bridge: Bridging the gap between Caribbean university education and industry exemplified by innovative MSc program in User Experience Design” . Intellectual Property Trademark Protection of the University’s Mascot During the reporting period, the SGSRE in collaborationwith the Office of the President, the Legal Counsel and Compliance Office, and the Department of Sport sought to secure trademark protection of the University’s Mascot, the UTech Knight. The University’s efforts bore fruit as the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) formally acknowledged the University’s application for trademark protection of the 15 representations of the University’s Mascot. Patent Agent The services of a Patent Agent were engaged to assist with the evaluation of the patentability of the results from selected research projects. The first project considered was the Hydrogen Gas project from which Dr. Earle Wilson and an engineering team from FENC designed a burner that enables conventional stoves to safely burn hydrogen gas as fuel of cooking.
