Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 21 Resident Life Retreat and Developmental Workshop The annual Resident Life retreat was held May 31 – June 3, 2018 at the Jewel Dunn’s River Beach Hotel and Spa, Runaway Bay, St. Ann. The retreat included a workshop, conducted by Dr. Shermaine Barrett, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies. The workshop was on Programme Planning and Objective Writing. Other presenters included Mrs. Dorrset Gabbidon-Pottinger, Assistant Registrar, Student Services, Mr. Craig McNally, Senior University Counsellor, Dr. Ganesh Shetty, Psychiatrist, Mrs. Heather White, Health Centre Administrator and Miss Tashoya Streete, Graduate Studies and Research Officer. CARRER AND PLACEMENT UNIT Client Visits, Career Sessions, and Resume Reviews The Office recorded 696 job requests from prospective recruiters for the year ending March 2019. This reflected a 23% increase in available jobs when compared to last year’s 565. Additionally, the office recorded 114 confirmed job placements which is a 19% increase when compared to last year’s 96 confirmed placements. Employment of Students/Graduates The Unit has assisted with filling vacancies for job placements for students and graduates for the year. The graph below shows the percentage of job placements that have been requested each month from various areas of specialization. Employment Empowerment Sessions The Employment Empowerment sessions held during Semester one were deemed a success and came to an end on November 1, 2018. The Sessions resumed on January 24, 2019 with the theme “Entrepreneurship: Be Your Own Boss.” The Unit completed 15 sessions for the period at the Papine Campus. Semester one had approximately 189 students in attendance and 487students in attendance for semester two respectively. UTech, Ja. Mentorship Programme The 2018/2019 Mentorship Programme commenced with the staging of its 10th annual Mentor Workshop on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 under the On February 9, 2019, the resident life team launched Mission Possible: GPA 4.0, a developmental programme initiative which aims to improve the GPA of resident students.
