Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 19 Generation of Leaders” May 7 – 9, 2018 at the Papine Campus and May 10 – 11, 2018 at the Moorlands Camp site in Manchester. A total of 135 students from the Students’ Union Council, clubs and societies, and Halls of Residence registered to attend the conference. The general objective of the student leadership conference was to inspire student leaders to serve in a manner that will influence positive and holistic growth amongst the student population and establish trends for successful leadership. The student leaders were exposed to training areas such as team building and exposed them to the UTech, Jamaica Core Values. Orientation/Week of Welcome for New and Transfer Students The University of Technology, Jamaica welcomed new and transfer students during its annual Orientation/ Week of Welcome under the theme “Pioneering Past; Bright Future.” The Papine Campus hosted its Orientation Programme from Sunday, August 19 to Saturday, August 25, 2018 on the Papine Campus, while the Western Campus hosted its orientation programme over a three-day period, from Monday, August 23 to Wednesday, August 25, 2018. The Academic Induction Ceremony for the Papine campus was held on August 25, 2018 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, while the Academic Induction Ceremony for the Western Campus was held on August 23, 2018 at the St John’s Methodist Church, Montego Bay. Leadership Seminars The Department of Student Services in collaboration with the Victoria Mutual Foundation and National Tertiary Students’ Ministry (NTSM) hosted its leadership and empowerment seminars for the second year on September 13, 2018 through to November 22, 2018. The programme was designed to empower and educate students in the areas of personal development, leadership and financial literacy. The programme attracted over 110 students. Chaplaincy The University welcomed two new chaplains during this period – Adventist Pastor Holland Thompson, and Methodist Rev. Dr. Alison Iton. Under the leadership of the Methodist Chaplain, Chapel Services are now hosted twice per month on Sundays in the newly renovated Papine Campus Chapel. Special Need/Disability The new Special Need Office for persons with disability opened in January 2019, on the ground floor of the Student Services building, which now allows the disabled community to have direct access to student services. The University welcomed its third deaf student, Ms. Shanika Rhoden, a past student of the Lister Mair Gilby High School for the Deaf, who was accepted in the Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies to pursue a Bachelor of Education in Food Service Management. The period saw special need students of varying disabilities completing their courses of studies at the University.
