Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 11 offered in Kingston and Montego Bay • Pre-University courses such as Developmental English, Foundation Mathematics, Preliminary Biology, Basic Physics, Fundamentals of Chemistry and Fundamentals of Accounting were offered to over three hundred (300) students. Short Professional Courses/Corporate Training • Completion of Emergency Medical Technician course with two cohorts and the recertification of several participants. • Collaboration with various UTech Ja. schools to offer training programmes, including Chair-side Dental Assisting Level 1 with the College of Oral Health Sciences; Entrepreneurial Skills for Pharmacists with the School of Pharmacy, and Fire Prevention with the School of Building and Land Management. • Delivery of two Peer Support training courses for members of the Jamaica Defence Force. Collaboration for customized training and certification is ongoing with various organizations and internal stakeholders including: • Jamaica Fire Brigade regarding the offering of an Emergency Management Technician course. • Jamaica Basketball Association regarding academic support for youths-at-risk to pursue tertiary studies. • The Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies for the development of a new module: Foundations of Academic Literacies, to be offered by the Academy and the exploration of student access to the Faculty’s Language, Technology, Research Centre (LTRC). • Certification of professional courses offered by the Institute of Law and Economics, and the Caribbean Centre for Organization Development Excellence. Calvin McKain Library Improved Library Services • Introduction of Sunday opening hours at the Papine Campus, and extended opening hou r s a t other campus locations • Installation and use of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) gates at the Dome Street, Montego Bay and Slipe Pen Road, Kingston campus libraries • Acquisition of a self-check machine in November 2018 which allows library users to borrow and check out books without the assistance of library staff. New Subscriptions/Resources • The library purchased some 951 new print books and 5,121 e-books. • A new subscription for this law database was started in October 2018. LexisNexis provides comprehensive and authoritative legal sources such as cases, reports, journals and legislation. The content includes: Halsbury’s Laws of England, All England Law Report, Commonwealth Library, Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Reports and Bahamas Law Reports • Curriculum Builder, an add-on service for EBSCOhost that enables users to bring library resources such as databases, e-books, and other digital resources easily and directly into the online learning environment, was made available on the Mr David Drysdale University Librarian
