Excellence Through Knowledge University of Technology, Jamaica ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 Page 10 Widening Access to Tertiary Education UTech, Jamaica exists to widen the opportunities for Jamaicans to access tertiary education. It is generally accepted that countries like ours need to increase the percentage of university graduates to well above the 10% at which it now stands in Jamaica. The challenge is to do so in a system based on openness, justice, fairness and equity, principles which our graduates themselves will be guided by, and, hopefully, adopt in their own professional practice. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead UTech, Jamaica at this stage of what I regard as its consolidation. I am convinced that this university has the potential to take its place among the great institutions of teaching, research and social outreach, and I am committed to creating a team and the partnerships necessary to pursue this ambition.
